Don't do link exchanges

Don't pay for links! Join communities like blogcatalog.com if you are a blogger and if you have a website make sure you have more links coming in. The more links you have pointing to your site the better. The more readers the better... .it takes time to get the readers you want

Dude,how r u so sure about it? Is it your own site? Such sites always cheats me,so i hardly do believe.

The site is not his one. It is a popular one and reputed one. The site is just as a blog directory where you can submit your blog and integrate your feeds with it..

The site is handy to track more peoples to your blog if you are running a genuine and good blog.

He may be right about not doing link exchanges if you have a blog but from saying that we shouldn't do link exchanges is a long distance.
If you have a site, it's good to have some good backlinks. And besides, even if you have a blog, a couple of good backlinks can really help you in the SEO part.
At least that's what I think

Link exchanges done properly (to quality and relevant sites) still has value in SEO. Buying links to manipulate PR and SERP are the ones that you get penalized for. You should ONLY buy links for traffic concerns.
