Menu Help

Hello, I've been tring to make a good looking menu for my site but have had a lot of trouble with it. I'd like to make my own but my knowlege is just a wee bit limited in this area. If someone could explain a good way to makes the following type of menu(s) or suggest a great place to get them from (for free 'cuase I'm broke) then that would be supper cool.

I'd like to make a verticle menu (preferably one that I can customize to fit the new, new look of my site) that has sub menus that apear off to the side on mous-over.

If possible, though I doubt it, I'd like to try to avoid downloading anything to make this or going through the process of uploading. I really just want to know how to make the code myself but any help really is apreciated. THank you bunches.
