Even though I am the adept of MyBB I also used SMF.
I must say, all the good reviews that it received were worthed but it has some flaws that are making it less attractive.
First of all, the design is kind of ugly and ... how should I say this... robotic. It reminds me of those creepy robots from black and white movies. It lacks style.
Second of all, even though it has many mods available, none of them are fun. It's ok as a forum for adults but if one would like to make a forum for kids or teenagers it wouldn't have much to attract them with. It only has the shop and the arcade section, but they are both very hard to install and configure.
I must admit that it's the best when it comes to working with IP's. It can easily ban a whole line of proxies and it has many banning options. From this point of view it's the best but unless your forum is the target of trollers or spam bots it's doesn't make such a big difference. Usually, you don't get to use it at it's full power.
Another thing about SMF is that it does not allow attachments. That is a big minus. Also, the have a simple "profile". In my opinion, the User Control Panel from MyBB, IPB or vBulletin is more attractive and elegant. So, a minus again.
And the biggest minus is the difficulty of installing it and the mods. I tried more than once and I barely managed to install it because it caused so many errors and no, I'm not a n00b It was SMF's fault
The mods are also difficult to install. Why should I struggle with editing when I can simply copy them in the inc/plugins folder of MyBB and just activating them?
So, in conclusion, SMF is a powerfull tool for professionals but it doesn't live up to his name.
Iam also running an SMF forum. I don't like their designs. Mainly their layout. I don't feel comfort when replying to messages, get into Control Panel, ect..
Another feature they lacking is the seperate admin section. Every thing comes on the index.php file. One file shows the entire forum.
Still they are doing fine job and reached on good position with in lesser time.

That is wrong. You can see the attachment option for every posts by clicking the "Additional Options..." under the textarea field. There are also some other features on the additional options. SMF satisfies every necessary bulletin board features.
