Project managers need to be careful when interviewing candidates for their new projects. We all work hard to make the best impression possible during a job interview. Sometimes we resort to exaggeration and “white lies” in this endeavor. By “sometimes”, you mean in most cases.
A survey of employees and project managers conducted by the career development site Interview Guys found that the majority of job seekers embellish the facts and openly lie in their CVs, attributing to themselves achievements that are not theirs or skills they do not have.
Applicants for the project also admit that they often lie when they tell the project manager that they see their future in the company in five years. In many cases, they adjust their interests, preferences, and antipathies in such a way that they correspond to the company’s values.
“Given how competitive the job market can be, many people resort to lies and exaggerations to stand out,” said Mike Simpson, CEO and co-founder of The Interview Guys. “We found that over 77% of job seekers exaggerate or lie when talking about their competencies and qualities, trying to win the favor of a potential employer. “Almost 65% copy more skills and knowledge in their CVs when applying for a job or position that is sought after by more people,” he said.
According to him, the main motivation behind these lies is securing a job offer. “If this means that a position in the company will be guaranteed, almost 83% of the candidates have no problem telling one or another” white lie “. Our research shows that the main factors motivating their behavior are higher pay, a more prestigious position and building better relationships with their potential new colleagues, “says Simpson.
The signs that project managers need to watch out for
The survey shows that the lies during a job interview are far from small. However, most managers say they know the lies when they hear them.
“Their job is to check the candidates’ biographies so that the chances of their lies remaining undetected are pretty low,” Simpson said. “Almost three-quarters of managers understand if a candidate is not telling them the truth during the interview,” he added.
The clearest sign that the candidate is lying is the obvious lack of knowledge or skills in answering specific questions. “Over 70% of managers surveyed say this is the best indicator,” said Simpson.
Other signs that a candidate is lying include various behavioral cues, such as a change of tone or restlessness. In addition to lies, job applicants can make a bad impression with a few more actions: “These include negative comments about past or present employers, demonstrating overconfidence, and answering questions in unnecessary detail,” Simpson said.
Tips for project managers about their candidates
When managers catch a candidate lying, the most common action they take is simply to reject his application. A survey of Interview Guys shows that more than half of managers immediately resort to this measure. However, is this the right approach, given the huge percentage of candidates who admit that they are not completely honest in their words during a job interview.
In the end, it all depends on the specific lies. “Insincere compliments to the company or exaggeration of the correspondences between its values and your personal views can be overlooked. However, when you lie about your professional experience, you run the risk of being shown the door, ”says Simpson.
