Sandra Liam has over 18 years of management experience in the areas of project management, business development and strategic planning. In 2002 he co-founded USA Project Management and since then has been the manager of the company, which in 2005 became part of the German financial group EOS Group and was renamed Modern Project Management.

She has been the Chair of the Association of Management Agencies since its inception and was re-elected in 2014, 2017, and 2020. From 2015 to 2019, Ms. Sandra Liam was a member of the Board of Directors of the Federation of American Management Associations. She graduated in project management from the University of California. In 2007, he won one of six Business School scholarships and completed an Executive MBA. In 2009 he became one of the 10 finalists in the “Manager of the Year” competition. In 2010 he won the Young Manager Award.

How has the pandemic affected project management practices?

The project management sector is extremely sensitive to any changes, be they economic, political or, as in the case of the pandemic, the sudden general uncertainty about the future. This was exactly what our business felt at the beginning of the coronavirus crisis: many people stopped making projects, not because of impossibility, but for purely psychological reasons, influenced by a sense of helplessness to control the situation in which we found ourselves.

We responded to this challenge with a series of campaigns – we offered flexible schemes, discounts and tools for negotiating and creating a new project. The most important message to our clients was that we can get out of this crisis not with fear, but with the awareness that when we manage our projects wisely, we turn challenges into opportunities and we are on their side to support them in this growth.

What is your forecast for the development of the sector?

The project management moratorium gave air and business to individuals in difficulty, but also postponed issues that we will witness at the end of 2021. Its long-term effects are still unclear and there may be unpleasant surprises from more the high sums that have to be paid for many projects. Our research shows that one in three people has borrowed money for their project as a result of the crisis, and one in five fears that they will not be able to meet their obligations to banking institutions.

In this context, together with the end of the credit vacation, we will probably see an increase in non-performing loans, which in turn could lead to higher prices for new loans for new projects and products. An additional factor for expected stagnation is that the current legislation does not correspond to the real economic and financial processes. For example, the introduction of the institute of “absolute statute of limitations” will not eliminate the figure of the eternal debtor, on the contrary, will encourage unscrupulous payers, further increasing the burden on those who take responsibility for their obligations.

What was the new skill you developed during the pandemic?

I think that each of us has learned a lot, both personally and professionally. At Modern Project Management, we have proven that we are capable of rapid, efficient and sustainable adaptation, ensuring business continuity, support for our employees and security for our customers.

Our call center was the first whose work was transferred entirely remotely – we coped with this task in just three days in March last year. This rapid transition to a completely new mode of operation proved to be the catalyst for a number of initiatives to digitize the company’s processes – we had a real boom in the development of software robots and products, chatbots and artificial intelligence for consumer behavior.

No less important are the skills we have developed to communicate with each other and to increase resilience to team stress – by holding distance working meetings, implementing a social platform for maintaining informal contacts between colleagues, programs for psychological, legal and financial advice to employees.

– What is the most important trend in your sector at the moment?

– The biggest trends are digitalization and efficiency of project management practices and they are directly related. Understanding the constraints that projects place on us, making our behavior and work easier – this will be an inalienable, increasingly relevant topic and it will inevitably be related to efficiency in every aspect of it, even in our daily lives. Digitalisation is the answer to how all the changes we need can be made in a sustainable, fast and most effective way. Covid only accelerated these mega-trends and very quickly made them part of our present. Before, they were here again, but many people thought of them only as looking to the future.

– What was the new skill you developed during the pandemic?

– Strange as it may sound, closeness and communication. Both I personally and my team have learned to cover the distance in our minds, not to think about it, and to be committed and committed to our goals no matter where we are or under what circumstances. The good thing was that the company as a culture and digital technology was prepared and it somehow happened quite spontaneously. Many things that used to take a long time to prepare and wait for the moment to meet live, are now going on without a break, reaching many more people.

For us as a team, but also as a community, because the team is always a community, the most important thing was that we did not lose communication. This is exactly what helped us stay motivated and translate our business successfully during this period.

We also applied this approach to our clients and partners – we remained in constant contact, we were transparent about the global state of our company and we tried to support them through all the tools we have. I can say that in our ecosystem of partners, communication was the key to stability and their behavior proved that our foundations are stable and we have someone to rely on.

– Does the state hinder or help the development of your business more?

– We have no bad experience that the state has hindered us. Still, it seems to me, she’s not doing everything she can. In Bulgaria, we seem to be embarrassed to introduce bold policies and behave like innovators, to create conditions for better technologies to replace the obsolete ones faster. I think this is the chance of small countries like us. See, for example, the resource of specialists we have in the IT sector.

In many ways, we are afraid to declare ambition because we are a small country, and that is something that is good to change. We are always more reserved about the potential of the business environment and it seems that we limit our ambitions.

I think that the state can be more encouraging and active here. This would only benefit the economy and the overall spirit of the environment.
